M. whereas cohesion policy should provide efficient responses for tackling poverty and social exclusion, creating employment and growth, promoting investment in education, health, research and innovation, fighting climate change and tackling demographic challenges, while maintaining respect for national and regional identities; whereas cohesion policy can only fulfil all these tasks if it is embedded in solid funding;

Is convinced that the role of small cities, towns and villages should be bolstered in order to support local economies and address demographic challenges; backs, therefore, the reinforcement of the second pillar of the common agricultural policy, the EAFRD; recalls, in this connection, the need to prioritise short supply chains in the economic options promoted by the EU, not only from an environmental perspective but also from the point of view of preserving local know-how and a rooted economy;
