Notes with concern that as indicated in the IPBES Global Assessment on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services report, nature is declining globally at rates unprecedented in human history and the rate of species extinctions is accelerating, with grave impacts on people around the world now likely, that will affect the life of our future generations; expresses its deep concern after the publication of the IPCC report on the ocean and cryosphere in a changing climate, on the decline of marine mammals and fisheries as wells as on the dramatic disappearance of coral reefs;

Calls for an in-depth analysis of all EU protected areas on the need for improvements and/or extension of these area: for improving the management and protection of the Natura 2000 network, good quality monitoring (ensuring sound scientific research including field work) of the conservation status of habitats and species under the EU nature conservation Directives, strengthening the legal grounds for protecting the connectivity of the network, and improve the efficiency of EU funded projects on the topic in the Member States; stresses that in the light of the recent IPCC report on the ocean and cryosphere in a changing climate a comprehensive assessment of EU marine protected areas is needed;

Insists that public awareness and therefore access to comprehensive information are vital for consumers to make informed decisions, in particular concerning the products that lead to deforestation, ecosystem destruction and human rights violations; calls on the Commission and Member States to improve the traceability and control of products through their value chains thereby increasing transparency also for consumers;
