Whereas closer economic ties with Taiwan do not contradict in any way EU's ‘the EU has so far followed a 'one China’' policy given that China and Taiwan respectively joined the Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in 1991, and acceded to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2002; whereas closer economic ties with Taiwan should not contradict that policy;
