Urges the Commission to draw up a global strategy for intermediate disadvantaged areas, reducing the existing disparities between Member States as regards the support granted to such areas; , and to establish a specific definition of intermediate areas in particular with regard to the transitional periods;

Takes the view thatCalls for the fight against the depopulation of rural areas shouldto form part of the strategy to support disadvantaged areas in the EU; considers it, for which purpose it is necessary to take a 'depopulation' criterion into account in the ‘fine-tuning’ that the Member States are to carry out when drawing up the map of intermediate disadvantaged areas;
