Stresses that SMEs are a fundamental engine of development and employment in EU economy, in particular in Mediterranean regions and countries, and that - for structural reasons -they hardly can exploit the full potential of the single market if charged with heavy tax and administrative burdens; asks the Commission therefore to eliminate unnecessary burdens and barriers.
