  In adopting the report by Mr Jean-Claude MARTINEZ (NI, F), on protection against specified zoonoses, Parliament affirmed the need to recognize the concept of potential zoonoses and to include therein BSE. The amendments adopted by Parliament aim at: - enlarging the scope of the basic directive to include specified zoonoses and zoonotic agents (parasites, viruses, bacteria, etc.); - establishing a distinction between 'known zoonoses' (e.g. salmonellosis, foot-and-mouth disease, rabies) and potential zoonoses (diseases which could be transmitted from animals to man) with a view to including therein BSE. �

  OBJECTIVE: to review certain provisions of Directive 92/117/EEC concerning measures for protection against specified zoonoses and specified zoonotic agents in animals and products of animal origin pending the in-depth review of the Directive concerned. SUBSTANCE: It is proposed to extend certain time limits laid down in Directive 92/117/EEC concerning: - the provisions relating to the new rules for the reporting system for zoonoses; - the sampling methods to be developed and the examinations to be carried out; - the implementation and approval of certain national measures together with the presentation and approval of plans submitted by third countries. �
