The European Parliament adopted the resolution drafted by Elmar BROK (EPP-ED, Germany) and approved the proposal to update the partnership and co-operation agreement (PCA) between the Republic of Azerbaijanand the EU following enlargement of the Union.
\nPURPOSE: to\n conclude a Protocol between the Community and Azerbaijan on a Partnership and\n Cooperation Agreement which takes account of EU enlargement in May 2004.
LEGISLATIVE\n ACT: Council and Commission Decision on the conclusion of the Protocol to\n the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement establishing a partnership between\n the European Communities and their Member States, of the one part, and the\n Republic of Azerbaijan, of the other part, to take account of the accession\n of the Czech Republic, the Republic of Estonia, the Republic of Cyprus, the\n Republic of Latvia, the Republic of Lithuania, the Republic of Hungary, the\n Republic of Malta, the Republic of Poland, the Republic of Slovenia and the\n Slovak Republic to the European Union.
CONTENT: since\n the accession of the ten new EU Member States in May 2004 the Protocol to the\n Partnership and Cooperation Agreements between the Community and Azerbaijan has been applied on a provisional basis only.
This Act\n approves the Protocol on behalf of the Community, the European Atomic Energy\n Community and the Member States.
ENTRY INTO\n FORCE: the Protocol will enter into force on 1 May 2004 provided that all the\n instruments of approval of the Protocol have been deposited prior to that\n date. Should this not be the case then the Protocol will enter into force on\n the first day of the first month following the date of deposit of the last\n instrument. In the case that some of the instruments have not been deposited\n prior to 1 May 2004, the Protocol applies provisionally with effect from 1\n May 2004.
