\nBACKGROUND: Council Regulation (EC) No\n2533/98 is a key component in the legal framework\nsupporting the statistical information collection tasks of the\nEuropean Central Bank (ECB) assisted by the national central banks\n(NCB).
\nThe ECB has consistently relied on this Regulation to\ncarry out and monitor the coordinated collection of statistical\ninformation necessary to undertake the tasks of the European System\nof Central Banks (ESCB), including the task of contributing to the\nsmooth conduct of policies pursued by the competent authorities\nrelating to the prudential supervision of credit institutions and\nthe stability of the financial system.
\nCouncil Regulation (EU) No 1024/2013 confers on the\nECB specific tasks concerning policies relating to the prudential\nsupervision of credit institutions and the stability of the\nfinancial system within the Union and individual Member\nStates.
\nTo minimise the reporting burden on reporting agents\nand to enable proper performance of supervision of financial\ninstitutions, markets and infrastructures conferred on all\ncompetent authorities, it is necessary to amend Regulation (EC) No\n2533/98.
