Expresses its concern over the rise in energy prices, points out that energy poverty affects over 50 million people in the EU and calls on the Commission to take action in conjunction with the Member States and regional and local authorities to eradicate energy poverty in the EU, taking as a starting point universal access to electricity in order to improve conditions for EU consumers and especially the most vulnerable among them;

Calls on the Commission to step up aid to the Covenant of Mayors as a tool to facilitate sharing of good practices by local authorities, the regions and the Member States, and so that local authorities are informed about financial aid available to them so they may pool resources to set up local supply networks and be able to connect to other power nodes throughout the regions, thereby improving consumers’ access to energy;
