Underlines that working towards increased access to sexual and reproductive rights and health services is an important pillar of safeguarding women’s human rights, in this context calls on the EU to step up its work to meet the Millennium Development Goals in terms of improving maternal health, including through access to information, modern contraception, and a range of reproductive health services; insists that the Commission pursue this aim in all its international development policy actions;

Calls on the Commission to help tackle ‘selective abortion’, as the image of a daughter as a burden and a son as a financial provider remains pervasive in many societieswork to prevent gender-biased sex selection, not through any restrictions in access to reproductive health services and technology, but through intensified efforts to end the structural discrimination of women and girls, including abolishing sex discriminatory legislation, empowering women and girls through education, addressing policies on inheritance, dowry, financing old age and other personal security issues, policies for the determination of surname, etc.;
