Notes with concern the rate of fish stock depletion in the Adriatic and Ionian Seas as a result of overfishing; stresses that fisheries are one of the key components in the economies of the coastal areas and islands; deems it necessary, therefore, to consider the protection and preservation of fish stocks to be a paramount objective of the strategy, to take decisive action in the form of data sharing, joint monitoring platforms and fishery management plans, and to further develop the aquaculture sector; points out that, for the protection of fisheries as an important economic sector in many parts of the region, there is a need, in the transitional period, to support adjustment to fishing limits through subsidies for the purchase of new vessels and equipment via the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF);
