(9a) Salt impulses from the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean are crucial for the cod stocks survival in the Baltic Sea. During the last decade the level of salt in the water in the Baltic Sea has decreased. At the same time an increasing area of sea bottoms, especially in deeper waters in the Baltic Sea, has become oxygen free, which makes it difficult, if not impossible, for the cod to spawn in their natural spawning grounds. A precautionary approach is therefore needed when exploiting the cod stocks in the Baltic Sea.
