Expresses concern at and opposition to the non-selective approach being taken, consisting of banning the use in the Mediterranean region of traditional gears and techniques (e.g. banning the use of gillnets outside of the category of commercial fishing), whichbanning of traditional gears and techniques which may form part of the local inhabitants’' traditions and way of life, are more environmentally friendly, and do not have a significant impact on the status of endangered stocks; feels that a non-selective approach to the use of gears and techniques is having a serious impact on the viability of already marginalised coastal and island communities, causing further depopulation and hindering development and innovation;
