Stresses the importance of maintaining and stepping up efforts in the areas of data protection, safeguards for children, the protection of victims of criminal acts, Roma people, violence against women, freedom of religion and belief, public health, the recognition of marital status in the EU, gender equality, the rights of persons with a disability and the rights of elderly persons; Justification I have removed the words 'Roma people' because I consider that we should not favour one ethnic community over any other; all European citizens should receive equal assistance and protection regardless of their ethnic origin.
