C b. whereas the Western Balkans are turning into an area of strategic and geopolitical competition between major global and regional powers who are aiming at increasing their influence in the region as well as on the individual countries located therein; whereas these attempts are orchestrated through various means, ranging from strategic investments to military cooperation, which usually marred with pervasive propaganda, mis- and disinformation campaigns that aim to minimise the role of the EU as a privileged partner for the region; whereas the immediate and long- term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have been instrumentally used by third actors as a way to reinforce their influence on the region at the expenses of the EU’s role;
