K. whereas EU products have to comply with a series of stringent environmental, animal health and consumer protection rules and standards covering production operations, feed, welfare, transport, processing and social conditions of employment; whereas the result is excellent quality and sustainable products which may be more expensive and, thus, less competitive than the imported ones, which frequently arrive on the EU market at lower than expected prices thanks to practices which are unsustainable from an environmental and social point of view, and whose production has been accompanied by poor animal welfare standardsand health standards, with potential repercussions on human health;
