Stresses that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a critical global health issue that requires commitment and willingness of the Member States to cooperate within the EU and at the international level and a proactive, coordinated action; underlines the importance of taking a holistic approach to tackling AMR through the one-health approach, by ensuring coherence and coordination between human health, animal health and the environment;

Reminds that food is one of the possible vehicles for transmission of resistant bacteria from animals to human beings and furthermore that drug- resistant bacteria can circulate in populations of human beings and animals, through water and the environment such as the risks for infection with resistant organisms by contaminated crops treated with antimicrobial agents or by manure, and farmyard run-offs into groundwater. Points out that in this context the spread is influenced by trade, travel and both human and animal migration;

5. Stresses that the prevention and control of infections in animals are key to tackling AMR in agriculture and therefore disease prevention must be the first step for legislation tackling AMR in agriculture, both to, via ensureing a high standard of animal welfare and, among others, and thus reduceing the need to resort to antibiotics; emphasises that the prescription-only status for antibiotics and the accountability of professionals in the various sectors, as well as the cooperation between the veterinarian and the livestock farmers, are key factors for success; believes that antibiotics should never be used as compensation for poor hygiene or inadequate animal husbandry;
