Draws attention to the fact that, in accordance with an OECD report, the increase in overland shipments of goods and the associated increase in CO2 emissions up to 2050 will mainly be driven by Asian economies; in this respect it is stressed that in the coming years the overriding objective will be to maintain the competitiveness of the European transport sector, so that costly emission standards imposed by EU Member States do not lead to a fall in the competitiveness of EU undertakings.
