A. whereas research and innovation constitute a distinct dimension of the EU’s Energy Union, with energy R&D&I a key driver of the EU’s industrial leadership, global competitiveness, sustainable growth and job creation, as well as of the EU’s overall energy security, by reducing dependence on energy imports through an effective use of indigenous energy resources;

Urges the Commission and the Member States to put in place mechanisms for coordinating EU and national research and energy innovation programmes in order to foster synergies and avoid duplication, to ensure the most effective use of existingindigenous resources and infrastructure in all Member States, and to maximise the market uptake of new technologies and innovations across all EU regions; believes that including relevant information in national energy and climate plans could be conducive to that aim;
