In acknowledging the importance of the precautionary principle as a key mechanism for the European Union, both parties should agree that this principle should not be interpreted as a market- distorting mechanism. Canada and the EU commit to respecting and promoting the precautionary principle in all facets of trade and to ensuring that it is applied in such a way that does not create unjustified trade barriers.
