Stresses the need for the Commission and the Member States to reach a stronger commitment to applying Article 174 of the TFEU, particularly in regions with serious and permanent natural or demographic disadvantages, such as low population density or sparsely populated island and mountainous regions; Emphasises that greater territorial cohesion implies greater economic and social cohesion, and therefore calls for strategic investment in those regions with a view to making them more competitive, improving industry and territorial structure and, ultimately, stabilising the population in those areas;
