Believes that Iran's revolutionary legacy and its constitution as an Islamic StateRepublic must not be an impediment for finding common ground on matters related to democracy or human rights; considers, in this regard, that the Islamic Republic provides certain space for political pluralism, as demonstrated by regular, relatively competitive electoral processes, and encourages its further expansion to accommodate the diversity of views in the Iranian society; welcomes the fact that in the last elections to the parliament and Assembly of Experts the Iranian people have shown their will to pursue the course of moderation and re-engagement with the international community;

Welcomes the reforms made under the new Code of Criminal Procedure but expresses serious concerns that the Code does not fully guarantee international due process safeguards; calls on Iran to undertake a review of the 2014 Code of Criminal Procedure to ensure the inclusion of fail trial guarantees; calls on Iran to review and amend the law to ensure statements elicited as a result of torture, ill-treatment or other forms of coercion are excluded as evidence in criminal proceedings, and that all allegations of torture and other ill- treatment brought to the authorities' attention are automatically investigated;
