Stresses the importance of the social and economic dimension of fishing and of the maritime economy for local communities and some maritime and coastal regions; expresses its concern that jobs are being lost in these sectors and that there is no scope for conversion; calls for the Youth Employment Initiative to be used to promote employment in this industry;

Is also concerned that some Member States who are beneficiaries of ESIF funds are not in a position to co-finance certain projects in the current financial crisis, and consequently calls for continued attention to be paid to this issue and for mechanisms to be provided that will make it easier for funds to be used in these circumstances;
