Emphasises that rural areas within the Member States have a crucial economic and security role to play in our modern society, in which more than 12 million farmers provide a sufficient amount of healthy and safe food for half a billion consumers throughout the European Union; stresses that keeping these areas vibrant is of the utmost importance and calls on the EU to immediately increase funding for the agricultural sector in EU countries;
