Is concerned that climate change will have a major impact on ASEAN; urges the ASEAN member states to accelerate the shift towards low-carbon economies and to rapidly reduce deforestation, effectively curb forest fires and adopt more environmentally friendly technologies for transport and buildings; welcomes the EU’s initiative of a new dedicated EU- ASEAN Policy Dialogue on Environment and Sustainable Development; urges EU- ASEAN cooperation on the protection of maritime environments, in particular coral reefs and mangrove forests;

Is deeply concerned about the erosion of democracy and human rights in certain countries in the region and the restrictions on space for civil society, particularly for environmental and labour rights activists and media workers; hopes that specific and verifiable targets and measures will be included in the AICHR’s five-year work plan and that human rights violations will be actively monitored, investigated and prosecuted; urges all ASEAN member states to ratify further UN human rights conventions and the Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), as a previous step to re-launch negotiations on a regional EU-ASEAN free trade agreement;
