Recital 20 a (new)

(20a) In its resolution of 12 September2018 on autonomous weapon systems 1a 1athe European Parliament reaffirmed the EU’s ambition to be a global actor for peace, called for the expansion of its role in global disarmament and non-proliferation efforts and urged the Vice-President of the Commission / High-Representative of Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, the Member States and the Council to work towards the start of international negotiations on a legally binding instrument prohibiting lethal autonomous weapon systems. Lethal autonomous weapons are mostly based on Artificial Intelligence.
