1. Urges a shift away from trade- oriented and over-specialised agricultural policies and towards support for food sovereignty and local and regional markets; recalls that agroecology’s capacity to reconcile the economic, environmental and social dimensions of sustainability has been widely recognisedcalls for the prioritisation of local production and consumption that ensure local job creation, guarantee fair prices for producers and consumers, reduce countries' dependence on imports and their vulnerability to international price fluctuations; urges to support small- scale producers and farmers, and in particular women and youth; stresses the need to enable small-scale farmers to be less dependent on external inputs and to strengthen their resilience to crises, with countries facilitating the production, exchange and use of peasant seeds; recalls that agroecology’s capacity to reconcile the economic, environmental and social dimensions of sustainability has been widely recognised; urges the EU to ensure that working conditions and social protection throughout EU food supply chains meet national, EU and international standards for all workers and pay particular attention to vulnerable populations such as migrant workers;

Insists that EU funding for agriculture must be in line with Agenda 2030 and prioritise investments in agroecology, agroforestry and crop diversification; recalls those sustainable practices that secure nutritious, safe, affordable and high quality food throughout the year, preserve biodiversity, increase climate resilience, and are beneficial to the dynamic development of territories and the strengthening of social cohesion by reducing social inequalities; stresses the importance of preserving agricultural biodiversity, local animal and plant breeds and local varieties as part of the One Health approach;

Regrets that increasing vertical and horizontal concentration in the agri-food sector reinforces the industrial food and farming model; believes that the Green New Deal requires the creation of a new anti-trust environment; stresses the need to guarantee decent labour conditions for all workers and promote alternative business models rooted in the social and solidarity economy, such as consumer-friendly cooperative schemes; calls the EU to contribute through its cooperation programmes to improve the working conditions of farm workers globally and the income of small-scale farmers in partner countries;

Stresses that the EU-Mercosur Agreement is inconsistent with the Farm to Fork Strategy, in particular its reduction of dependence on animal feed, and the shift to a more plant-based diet and shorter supply chains; stresses the proven link between trade liberalization, agricultural over- specialisation, deforestation and climate change and call for agricultural trade policies that fully respect workers and indigenous rights, climate and the environment;

Stresses that EU free trade agreements (FTAs) should not disrupt local agriculture, damage small producers or exacerbate dependency on food imports; recalls the principle of policy coherence for development to ensure European exports do not hinder the development of local production; calls into question international trade rules which allow dumping through the WTO green box; welcomes the Commission’s commitment to compliance of EU trade agreements with the Paris Agreement, and calls for market access in FTAs to be conditional on compliance with process and production methods criteria; calls the EU to align its trade policy with the Farm to Fork and Biodiversity Strategies’ objectives, and the carbon neutral objective of the EU Green Deal, and consequently to review its FTAs;

Underlines that current food systems are unable to feed the world's population in terms of quantity, quality and diversity of products and to cope with the climatic, social, economic and health crises as demonstrated by the COVID-19 pandemic; underlines that 3 billion people cannot afford a healthy diet and that 690 million people suffer from hunger; highlights that estimates from the UN predicted that the COVID-19 pandemic could almost double the number of people suffering acute hunger by the end of 2020;
