Calls on the Commission to safeguard the competitiveness of the entire fishery sector and its production chain, placing particular emphasis on measures to halt the trend towards increased dependence on imports; calls on the Commissioner responsible for fisheries and maritime affairs in particular to initiate ongoing talks for the promotion of trade agreements with third countries in the Mediterranean area regarding the protection of fishers and the maritime areas concerned;
