Believes that the recent reform of the EU Emission Trading Scheme (ETS), with a planned phase out of free allowances and of all allowances within the next decade, coupled with expanded financial support from the Innovation and Modernisation Funds, will contribute to accelerating the decarbonisation of the energy and industrial sectors in Europe, through the substitution of fossil fuel use with the use of renewable energy technologies and energy efficiency solutions; is of the opinion that any future reform of the EU ETS should keep or strengthen the level of climate ambition of this instrument, in accordance with the principle of non-regression enshrined in the European Climate Law and the Paris Agreement, and should preserve the current architecture whereby negative emissions, even if safely and permanently stored, cannot offset necessary emission reductions in accordance with Union climate targets laid down in the EU Climate Law;
