Considers that civil society and NGOs play an instrumental role in shaping policies that benefit society and our environment; recalls the commitment of the Commission in its political guidelines to step up its engagement with civil society organisations that have expertise and an important role to play in defending specific societal issues and upholding human rights; urges the Commission to revise its guidelines1a from May 2024 in order to ensure the continuation of the funding of NGO activities, including advocacy, under the LIFE programme; considers that discontinuation of this funding for all NGO activities would seriously undermine the voice of civil society in the public debate and would cause a severe reputational risk for the Commission; _________________ 1a Guidance on funding for activities related to the development, implementation, monitoring and enforcement of Union legislation and policy

(19) This Regulation does not provide a legal basis for setting up or maintaining databases at national level for the storage of biometric data in Member States. Moreover, wthich is a matter of national law that needs to comply with Union law regarding data protection, including its necessity and proportionality requirements. (23) Member States should be able to decide whether to include a person’s gender on a document covered by this Regulation. By way of derogation from the first subparagraph, the document number may be inserted in zone I and the designation of a person’s gender shall be optional. Other than where required for the purpose of processing in accordance with Union and national law, bBiometric identifiers stored for the purpose of personalisation of identity cards or residence documents shall be processed exclusively for that purpose and shall be kept in a highly secure manner and only until the date of collection of the document and, in any case, no longer than 90 days from the date of issue. After this period, these biometric identifiers shall be immediately erased or destroyed.
