Calls on the European Parliament and the Commission to fund basic research investigating the links between obesity and chronic diseases such as cancer and also studies comparing and evaluating different interventions; epidemiological research needs to be undertaken in order to identify the factors which are most associated with the increases in obesity prevalence, and, together with intervention studies and psychological research, those factors that might give leverage for change should be identified;
