Underlines that the correct functioning of the single market supports the European Area of Freedom, Security and Justice and contributes to strengthening the European model of social market economy; also acknowledges that the establishment of a European Area of Freedom, Security and Justice will strengthen the single market and in particular consumer protection;

Stresses that Article 12 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union reaffirms – as a provision of general application – that consumer protection should be taken into account in defining and implementing other Union policies and activities; emphasises the importance of the proposed new Consumer Rights Directive as well as the upcoming modernisation of the Directive on package travel, the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive and the Directive concerning misleading and comparative advertising;

Calls on the Commission to ensure the removal of all barriers to the development of e-commerce through both legislative and non-legislative means; urges a quick solution to cross-border trade problems for online consumer purchases, particularly with respect to payments and cross-border deliveries; stresses the need to increase the confidence of consumers and business in cross-border e-commerce.
