Emphasises that a number of questions are raised by the costs associated with caring for a dependent, in relation to the support provided by social security and the tax benefits offered to families with dependent elderly relatives; warns against the fiscal benefits offered by some Member States to families who place their elderly in residential homes and which discriminate against families who prefer to provide care at home;

Calls on the Council of the European Union to adopt an opinion on the proposed revision approved by the European Parliament to Council Directive 92/85/EEC on the introduction of measures to encourage improvements in the safety and health at work of pregnant workers and workers who have recently given birth or are breastfeeding; recalls that the proposal adopted by Parliament contains important measures in this area and to encourage parenthood, through promoting life-work balance for men and women;
