1. Reminds the Commission that the EU’s energy policy must be in line with other priority policies of the Union, including its security, foreign and neighbourhood, trade, and development policies, to ensure the effectiveness of its energy policy as well as the coherence and credibility of its foreign policy; points out that work towards ensuring EU energy independence contributes, by the same token, to giving the Union a more important role on the global stage;

Recalls that the Union’s strategic partnerships with producer and transit countries, in particular countries covered by the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP), require adequate tools, predictability, stability and long-term investment; emphasises, to that end, that the Union’s climate objectives must be in accord with EU infrastructure investment projects oriented at diversifying supply routes and increasing the Union’s energy security, with a particular focus on developing indigenous sources of energy;
