2. Recommends an integrated approach to coastal tourism in the context of the Community's cohesion, maritime, fisheries, environmental, health and social policies, in order to create synergies and avoid inconsistent actions; recommends that the Commission apply such an integrated approach to the sustainable growth of coastal tourism as a strategic objective of its work programme for 2010-2015, also in the context of the mid-term review of the financial framework for 2007-2013;

Endorses the Committee of the Regions' view concerning the creation of a European coastal fund, and calls on the Commission to examine this suggestion in the context of the mid-term review of the financial framework for 2007-2013 and the Union's budget architecture for 2013; nonetheless recommends that the Commission consider introducing an environmental protection objective, especially for coastal areas and estuaries;

Reiterates its call on the Member States and the Commission, in view of the high incidence of marine pollution in numerous regions and port cities, to boost incentives for the supply of vessels in port from the land network; asks, therefore, for a proposal for the amendment of Council Directive 2003/96/EC; recommends that part of the pollution tax be used to promote green tourism in coastal areas;

Recommends that the public authorities concerned at national, regional and local level act to promote strategic projects for coastal tourism under their cooperation programmes, making available suitable levels of funding for such actions; in this connection, special attention should be paid to operations aimed at developing communications and IT;
