1. Supports the continued aim of the new programmes to remove barriers to employment in particular for women, especially those in rural areas, young persons, disabled, elderly and low- skilled workers, but notes that the objective of a higher employment rate for women is far from being achieved;

2. Calls for operational programmes on gender mainstreaming, tackling discrimination and promoting equal treatment and opportunities for women and men in the workplace and society in order to raise public awareness of these issues, and also to facilitate the achievement of these goals;

Calls on the Member States to avoid excessive delay in the reimbursement of the costs of completed projects, noting that the insolvency caused by such a practice frequently prevents the recipients - mainly local authorities and non-profit-making organisations - from pursuing further activities specific to their area of action.
