Takes the view that, almost a decade after their adoption, the Directives concerning the legal framework for the information society (i.e. the Data Protection Directive, Electronic Signatures Directive and Electronic Commerce Directive) appear out of date due to the increased complexity of the online environment and, the introduction of new technologies and the fact that EU citizens' data are increasingly processed outside of the EU; believes that, while the legal issues arising from some Directives can be resolved through an incremental update, other Directives need a more fundamental revision and that the adoption of an international framework for data protection should be promoted;
