Emphasises that the unequal division of family responsibilities is at the root of the unequal position of women in the labour market; stresses that reconciliation of work and home duties is a key condition for gender equality, which should be promoted by investment in care infrastructure and encouragement of men’s participation in domestic labour by means of European legislation on parental and paternity leave and flexible working time arrangements;

Stresses that the feminisation of poverty is the result of factors including women’s career breaks, gender inequalities in career progression, the gender pay gap, the pension gap and poverty in households headed by single mothers, and that the reduction of poverty levels by 20 million by 2020 can be achieved by anti-poverty policies that are grounded in gender mainstreaming; ;
