1. ApprovesRegards positively the Commission’s proposal to makereflect upon a set of indicators – in addition to GDP figures – to be made available for EU policies with a view to improving both the circumstances in which decisions are taken and the response to the concerns of citizens in Europe’s various regions; to that end, supports Eurostat’s activities; acknowledges, however, that at scientific level no additional criteria have until now proved to be as reliable as GDP;

IBelieves that in the light of the ever closer degree of interdependence between economic, social and environmental issues, takes the view that focusing onfurther studies should be conducted aiming at identifying additional parameters to complement GDP, alone is likely to provide an incomplete impression that takes no account of the actual situations in the regions, and could result in poor choices being made and inappropriate decisions being takennd able to give a more complete picture of the actual situations in the regions, and in particular of the added value produced by EU policies;
