The present problems, including food shortages, water scarcity, the rise of temperatures and evapotranspiration and the risk of soil degradation, require new, integral and scientific agriculture policies applied to the Mediterranean climate conditions. With the help of the European and national institutions, the policies need to combine the research and development of crops locally adapted to the new environmental challenges, including water saving, while giving enough revenues to farmers to maintain a European standard of living;
