Paragraph 1
1. Points out that, as a consequence of the economic crisis, unemployment and social hardship are still increasing in a number of Member States, and that these affect men and women in different ways; therefore calls on the European Union to reinforce its commitment, and to take specific measures, to eradicatinge poverty and combat social exclusion, particularly to eradicate child poverty, as extreme poverty and social exclusion constitute a violation of human rights; calls on the Commission and the Council to cooperate closely with the Member States to ensure that the necessary measures are taken and that all children are given the same opportunities in life, given that the reduction of child poverty is one of the priorities of the Year for Combating Poverty;

2a. Calls on the Commission to strengthen the European strategy on social inclusion and protection, in accordance with the ‘European Platform Against Poverty’ initiative, and to step up efforts to improve the situation of women, and particularly single mothers, to allow them to live with dignity;

4. Takes note of the Council’s decision of 17 June 2010 to leave it up to Member States to set their national targets for reducing the number of people at risk of poverty and exclusion on the basis of one or several of the three indicator agreed upon by the Council; considers that Member States using only the ‘jobless household’ indicator may systematically neglect problems such as in-work poverty, energy poverty, the poverty of single mothers, child poverty and social exclusion;
