1. Regrets the fact that Member States have not done more to address the gender pay gap; is concerned that women in the EU earn on average 16 % less than men doing work of equal value; calls on the Member States to improve and up-to-date statistics on the gender pay gap;

2a. Points out that the number of early school leavers in Europe is still very high and is affecting the youth unemployment rate and that this problem therefore needs to be tackled by modernising education systems and curricula, making use of European Social Fund (ESF) assistance;
