Calls for more emphasis to be laid on protection of the rights of the child, and especially in regard to help for children who are removed from their home while living abroad; considers that the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child should be the basis for settling all child custody disputes involving families residing outside their own country, as this pays special attention to preserving the childʼs identity;

Stresses that the interests and rights of children of EU citizens should be properly protected, not just within the European Union but also beyond its borders, and calls consequently for enhanced cooperation with the institutions responsible for childrenʼs well-being in non-EU Nordic countries; considers that all the EUʼs partners (including members of the EEA) ought to ratify the 1996 Hague Convention on Jurisdiction, Applicable Law, Recognition, Enforcement and Co-operation in Respect of Parental Responsibility and Measures for the Protection of Children;
