Favours the voluntary indication of the origin of the raw materials which have gone into processed foods, while opposing the compulsory indication of the place of origin of agricultural products since this would saddle European industry with high costs which would be disproportionate to the potential value added generated by such a measure; is aware that European industry already has to meet strict labelling requirements in the interests of accurate consumer informationStresses that the indication of the country of origin of a food should be provided for foods consisting of a single ingredient and for the significant ingredient and the characterising ingredient(s) in multi-ingredient food products; emphasises that, for meat and foods containing meat, the designation of the country of origin has to take into account the places of birth, rearing, and slaughter;

Believes it is necessary to promote otherrganic farming as an environment- friendly production methods, such as 'integrated production'; stresses that regulating integrated production at EU level would enhance the visibility of farmers' and stockbreeders' efforts in favour of food safety and the environment in the face of third-country imports; favours, at the same time,; therefore favours a promotion and marketing campaign for European integrated productionorganic farming;

14. Regrets the failure of the Commission's communication to mention the need to encourage promotion measures, given their importance for ensuring the profitability of European farmers' efforts in terms of quality, food safety and the environment for sustainable production methods; believes that the promotion instruments currently available to the EU need to be revised so as to improve their efficiency; proposes, in this connection, extending to the EU market the promotion aids recently introduced in the wine sector;
