1. Stresses that the European Environment Agency (EEA) provides sound, independent information on the environment; commends the quality of its outputs released in 2019, such as the reports about sustainability transitions in Europe, climate change adaptation in the agricultural sector, preventing plastic waste, and the greenhouse gas intensity of transport fuels and the State of the Environment Report;

Notes the key role of the EEA in delivering quality data on the state of our environment, which becomes increasingly important in light of the huge challenges that the Union faces in tackling the climate and biodiversity crisis and finding answers with the European Green Deal; welcomes that the EEA's opinion is being heard throughout the institutions of the Union and recommends that the scientific committee of the EEA plays a key role in advising the Commission;

2. Notes that in 2019, the EEA's total budget was EUR 52 059 228 (a 20,9 % reduction on 2018), of which EUR 39 733 971 (representing an increase of 5,3 % compared to 2018) came from the general budget of the Union; notes that the EEA is expected to play a key role (monitoring, reporting, validating) in supporting the European Green Deal actions and the 8th Environmental Action Programme1a; insists therefore the staff budget for the EEA should be increased to meet these obligations; notes that any future cuts will negatively impact the functioning of the EEA and the delivery of the European Green Deal; _________________ 1aProposal for a Decision of the European Parliament and of the Council on a General Union Environment Action Programme to 2030 (COM(2020)652)

Invites the EEA to continue promoting cooperation with other Union agencies and international organisations, and fostering dialogue with stakeholders and citizens; highlights that a perfect example of such a cooperation would be a layperson/citizen science project around the COPERNICUS programme, as the existing data could be used, together with trained staff, to bring citizens and the institutions of the Union together;
