Points out that Europe’s cultural heritage makes it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world and that cultural tourism, which is of key importance in boosting growth and employment, accounts for 40% of European tourism; stresses the importance of cultural tourism as an economic factor, including in rural areas; emphasises that, in order to maintain current tourist volumes and attract new tourists, Europe's cultural and natural heritage needs to be conserved and showcased and the right balance needs to be struck between expanding the tourism sector and protecting cultural heritage;

5. Asks the Commission to bolster existing European measures and programmes relating to cultural tourism and cultural heritage that have proved effective, to look into the feasibility of introducing a ‘European cultural card’ which would offer reduced entrance fees for museums, monuments, archaeological sites, libraries, theatres and so on, and to provide targeted financial support under EU instruments including the Structural Funds; welcomes too, in this regard, the EU institutions’ efforts to launch a European Cultural Heritage Year.
