Congratulates the Commission on the steps it has taken and particularly on its proposals for revision of Directive 92/85/EEC in relation to maternity protection and Directive 86/613/EC in relation to self-employed workers and ‘assisting spouses’ in family businesses; highlights, once again, the need to address the issue of paternity leave and asks the Commission, therefore, to support any moves to introduce paternity-leave entitlement at European level, which is an essential means of providing support and assistance to mothers;
