Considers that, in view of demographic trends and the need to ensure that pensions can be paid for, it is necessary for more people to participate in the labour market and to do so for longer; observes that life expectancy is growing and calls on Member States to considertakes the view that despite increasing life expectancy any increase in the statutory retirement age or the automatic linking of the statutory retirement age to life expectancy must be preceded by labour market adjustment measures designed to guarantee employment and lifelong learning for experienced workers, since this will ensure that such workers do not leave the labour market prematurely;
