– the authoritarian regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, who are systematically undermining Nicaragua’s democratic structures; recalls that the regime in Nicaragua maintains strong ties with other autocracies, such as those in Iran, Venezuela and Cuba; condemns, in the strongest terms, the systematic human rights violations and abuses perpetrated by the Cuban regime; strongly condemns and fully rejects the electoral fraud orchestrated by the regime in Venezuela and urges the EU and its Member States to recognise Edmundo González Urrutia as the legitimate and democratically elected President of Venezuela; demands that the Maduro government cease its policy of repression and attacks on civil society and the opposition;

Reiterates that a peaceful, stable and rules-based Indo-Pacific is of vital European interest; encourages, to this end, closer foreign, security and defence policy ties with like-minded partners in the region in line with the EU strategy for cooperation in the Indo-Pacific; welcomes, in this regard, the ongoing cooperation with Japan on the project for developing a next generation fighter aircraft; encourages the VP/HR to promote the visibility and effect of the EU’s external action together with our Indo-Pacific partners, particularly Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and Japan;

CIs worried about the risks resulting from this new phase of Sino-Russian relations and considers that the rise of China remains one of the primary geopolitical challenges of the 21st century and requires a multi-dimensional response through which the EU maintains its engagement with China on a number of key issues; calls on the VP/HR and the Member States to maintain diplomatic engagement while increasing the EU’s assertiveness towards China in order for it to assume its responsibility as a permanent member of the UN Security Council;

Calls the Commission to implement tailor-made partnerships with key third countries of origin and transit, using all policies and instruments at the EU’s disposal to achieve concrete results creating and supporting economic incentives for potential in their home countries and supporting third countries’ development in order to address root causes of irregular migration. Member State contributions in these partnerships – diplomatic, technical and financial – will be of fundamental importance in delivering results
