Notes that, according to the 2009 Eurobarometer, 76 % of Union citizens agree that there is corruption within the institutions of the EU; notes that, according to the 2009 Eurobarometer, 98 % of Greek citizens consider that corruption is a major problem in their country; is deeply concerned about the proven manipulation of financial statistics and tax evasion in that Member State; notes the generalised public-sector corruption throughout the administration, including in public procurement, as recognised by the Prime Minister of Greece; draws attention to the significant effect in terms of costs that this has on Greece’s budget; calls on the Commission to investigate as a matter of priority the circumstances under which the Commission was provided with wrong macroeconomic data for such a long period of time;

Notes the recent macroeconomic figures with regard to public debt and public deficit provided by Greece and the disparity compared to previous data; calls on the Commission to provide Parliament with a detailed report regarding the flow of information between Member States and the Commission on economic and monetary issues; calls on the Commission to report to Parliament in detail about the macroeconomic information received from Greece as well as the methodology applied and the exact point in time at which the Commission was provided with each category of statistical data; urges the Commission to assess the monetary and economic procedure by which it is informed by Member States and to clearly indicate where the institutional responsibility for shortcomings rests;
